Do You Still Need a Website if You Have Instagram and Facebook? (Malaysia)

If you run a small business in Malaysia, you have probably asked this question — or been asked it: why pay for a website when Instagram and Facebook are free? It is a fair question, and the honest answer is not "you must have a website or you will fail." Plenty of Malaysian businesses do real revenue on social media alone. But there are also things a Facebook page will never do for you, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. This post lays out both sides so you can decide based on where your business actually is.
Why going social-first makes sense in Malaysia
Malaysians live on their phones, and buying behaviour reflects that. Customers DM a shop on Instagram, ask for prices in the comments, and close the deal on WhatsApp. Many successful local brands started exactly this way: post the product, reply to enquiries, deliver via Grab or a courier. There is no upfront cost, no technical setup, and you get feedback on your offer within days. If that is how your customers already behave, starting on social media is not laziness — it is sensible.
What Instagram and Facebook genuinely do better
Let us give social media its due. There are things it does better than any website:
- ●Discovery and reach. A good Reel or a shared post can put you in front of thousands of people who have never heard of you. A new website cannot do that on day one.
- ●Community and trust-building. Regular posts, replies and stories let people get to know the person behind the business — which matters a lot in Malaysia, where people buy from people.
- ●Zero cost to start. You can test a product idea this weekend without spending a single ringgit.
- ●Speed. Announce a promo, a new menu item or a closure in seconds.
What a website does that social media cannot
Now the other side, and this is where social-only businesses eventually feel the ceiling.
- ●You own it. Your Instagram account belongs to Meta. Accounts get restricted, hacked or banned — sometimes wrongly, and getting one back can take weeks with no human to call. Algorithm changes can cut your reach overnight through no fault of yours. Your website, on your own domain, cannot be taken away by a policy change.
- ●Google search visibility. When someone searches "wedding photographer Petaling Jaya" or "florist same-day delivery KL", Google shows websites, not Instagram grids. If you are not on Google, that customer goes to a competitor who is. We wrote a full guide on how to get your business on Google.
- ●Credibility with serious buyers. Corporate clients, B2B buyers and anyone spending a larger sum will check whether you have a proper website before they commit. An SSM-registered business with a clean, fast site simply reads as more established.
- ●Structured information. Pricing tables, full menus, booking forms, delivery areas, FAQs — social media buries all of this three questions deep in your DMs. A website answers it instantly, even while you sleep. Restaurants feel this acutely, which is why we built a dedicated page on websites for restaurants.
- ●Analytics you own. On your own site you can see exactly which pages people visit, where they come from and what they do before enquiring — data that stays yours, not locked inside a platform dashboard.
None of this means social media is bad. It means social media is rented land, and a website is land you own. Most businesses eventually want both.
When social alone is honestly fine — for now
We build websites for a living, so take note that we are saying this anyway: there are situations where you genuinely do not need one yet.
- ●You are very early. If you launched last month and are still figuring out what sells, spend your energy on the product and on talking to customers, not on a website.
- ●Your business is purely walk-in and local. A kopitiam with a full house every morning and no delivery ambitions gets limited value from a website beyond a Google Business Profile.
- ●You are testing an idea. Validate demand on Instagram first. If nobody buys from your posts, a website will not fix that.
In these cases, our honest advice is to wait. Set up a free Google Business Profile, keep posting, and come back when enquiries start slipping through the cracks or you want customers who search on Google rather than scroll.
The combined play: a very Malaysian funnel
The businesses that grow steadily here rarely choose one or the other. They run a simple three-step funnel: social media for attention, a website to convert and rank, and WhatsApp to close. Instagram gets you noticed; your website answers the detailed questions — prices, packages, portfolio, booking — and shows up when people search your service plus their area; and a WhatsApp button on every page lets the customer start a chat the moment they are ready. Each channel does the job it is best at.
This also protects you. If your reach drops after an algorithm change, Google search traffic keeps enquiries coming. If your account ever gets locked, your customers can still find you, read your prices and message you. You are no longer betting the whole business on one platform's goodwill.
The cost reality check
The usual objection is cost, so here are real numbers. A custom-coded starter site — one to three pages, built to load fast and typically live in about a week — starts from RM1,500 on our pricing page, with three months of free hosting included. That is a one-off cost, not a monthly subscription, and it is a fraction of what many businesses quietly spend on boosted posts in a year. If you later want a blog, on-page SEO and WhatsApp integration built in, the Business package covers that. You do not need to start big; you need to start owned.
So — do you still need a website if you have Instagram and Facebook? If you are brand new or purely walk-in, honestly, maybe not yet. But if you are getting repetitive questions in your DMs, losing enquiries to competitors who show up on Google, or selling to customers who expect a proper online presence, the answer is yes. If you would like to know exactly what that would cost for your business, request a free quote — we will send you an itemised one within one business day, and we are happy to discuss it over WhatsApp.
